SYNOPSIS

A civil rights story that was never told…, until now. An emotional march from past to present combining rarely seen news footage from 1964 with present day testimony to tell the true story of troubled times in the historic tourist town of St. Augustine, Florida. A glimpse into the courage of the American heroes who put their lives on the line to force the President of the United States to sign the first civil rights act. The film also focuses on the challenges brought by the aftermath of desegregation. In the end we see signs of hope and reconciliation while being challenged to take the next step forward.

“A powerful and important film”.
Orlando Weekly

“The raw power of footage depicting 1960s-era civil rights protesters and their usually harsh treatment at the hands of white authorities is an evergreen gut punch, and “Dare Not Walk Alone” — a powerful slice of roiling American history.”
Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times

“…wealth of rare historical footage and powerful eyewitness testimony. Mr. Dean, to his credit, focuses not on vilifying his subject but on unveiling a time when doing the right thing demanded more courage than most people possessed.”
Jeanette Catsoulis, New York Times

“From start to finish Dare Not Walk Alone is built on incredible archival footage. It’s nothing short of breathtaking to see these demonstrations, and the clear and unmitigated cruelty incurred by these activists, from the points of view of general passersby. Their stalwart gentility and understanding in the face of violence and hatemongering is lastingly resonant.”
Sara Schieron, Box Office Magazine

“Our generation’s job is to change hearts and minds. I think this film has the power and ability to do that.”
Matthew Zane, San Jose Spartan Daily

“Dare Not Walk Alone is full of such revelations. It’s a powerhouse of a picture, minutely attuned to disparities of class and race—and even infrastructure… The movie, gracefully scored with local hip-hop and gospel recordings, is a triumph of outrage and empathy.”
Aaron Mesh, Willamette Week

“Brave filmmaking”.
San Jose Mercury News

“Eschewing overly explicative narration, Dare Not isn’t afraid to trade in silences, or let 8mm or newsreel footage unfold under a trip-hop spiritual beat. The effect is often mesmerizing and certainly heart-rending.”
Brent Simon, Los Angeles City Beat

“The film includes never before seen footage of Dr. King and Brock in several confrontations, resulting in the violent arrest of many, including Dr. King. At a time when most Americans feel like issues of race and equality were solved in the 1960’s, ‘Dare Not Walk Alone’ reminds us that the war of poverty, education and justice, is still ours to win. In this post Katrina world in which we now live this film says: We are not there yet but there is hope…”
Robert, TLA.com

“A heart-wrenching and yet unifying feature documentary…”.
San Jose Metro

“…packs a punch.”
