A small town indoor pool and a limitless mind make the setting for this stunning comedic fantasy. The pool is where local residents go to escape the daily grind and enter a fantastical dream world. Adrift in these daydreams, the Anton (Denis Lavant) finds Eva (Chulpan Hamatova), a beautiful woman who has the power to take this working class visionary into a strange, surreal world to live together in love. Wordless, Astonishing. Tuvalu is like no other film in recent cinematic history.
David Hunter, Hollywood Reporter
Wonderful, animated with a deliriously cartoonish spirit — a delight.
Time Out NY
Astounding. Lavant has a wonderfully expressive catcher’s mitt of a face that renders words superfluous. When’s the last time you said any of that about a blockbuster film?
Boston Globe
A Shining gem, I love this movie!
Chicago Sun Times
A one-of-a kind charmer. Captivating.
Leonard Maltin, Playboy
A multi-layered masterpiece.
Daytona Beach News
Bravura. Cheeky wit, playful composition and highly recommended. Set sail for ‘Tuvalu’ today.
Austin Chronicle
Considering how much praise “Delicatessen” has received over the years it’s suprising ‘Tuvalu’ hasn’t found more recognition. The film is brilliantly inventive. Definitely one of the top 50 Cult films of all time.
Entertainment Weekly
Tuvalu combines the humor of Buster Keaton with the originality of the kind of work the directors Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro have done – like Delicatessen – and the aesthetic of silent films. The story Tuvalu tells is also as old fashioned as they come. But due to its many film references, the overall creativity of the project and the cinematography it stays with you. Plus, the main actor Denis Lavant adds an inspired improvisational element to his role. Overall the film is a fun and funny, inventive romance.
